Megan: A little bird told me you're going to learn how to swim this summer. Is that right?
Cassia: [scuffs her toe on the floor] È vero. Last year, Papà showed me the kicking and arm parts. But this year, he wants me to try without floaties.
Megan: You seem nervous.
Cassia: I am! I never tried without floaties before. What if I sink? Do little girls sink?
Megan: Most float.
Cassia: Are you sure? Nico said girls sink in water because they have too much hair. And I do have lots of curls...
Megan: Who is Nico?
Cassia: A boy in my preschool class. He's friends with Tino, but he's a big meanie. So is his buddy, Darin. I don't know why Tino likes playing with those dumb boys.
Megan: Tino is your friend, right?
Cassia: Yep. Tino's not mean at all. He said I can practice swimming at his pool, and he'll keep all the sharks and octopuses away.
Megan: He sounds brave.
Cassia: He is. Maybe when I get real good, we can play swimming games. I'd make a good mermaid. He can be a sea monster or something.
Megan: What else are you doing for fun this summer?
Cassia: I'm going to show Tino how to catch fireflies. My cousin Seri taught me the secret trick.
Megan: Will you share it with us?
Cassia: Mm-hmm. First, you have to go outside when the sun goes down. Well, almost down, but before the stars come out. Then, you sit low like a frog. Tall grass and wheat fields are the best spots. The fireflies come real close if you don't move.
Megan: How do you catch them?
Cassia: Like this [cups her hands]. You close up the cracks in your fingers so they don't crawl out, but you gotta be careful. They squish real easy.
Megan: How do you hold them?
Cassia: I just told you.
Megan: No, I mean do you put them in a jar?
Cassia: For a while. I used to keep them all night in my room, but Papà said that wasn't good.
Megan: Why not?
Cassia: Would you want to be stuck in a jar? And while all your friends go flying around the stars? That'd be the worst time out ever.
Megan: I guess so.
Cassia: Anyways, Eleni promised to take me and Tino strawberry picking, too. I've picked cherries before but never strawberries. I'm so excited.
Megan: That should be fun. Maybe you and Eleni can make a strawberry pie?
Cassia: Err...maybe. Eleni's not too good at baking stuff. Papà or Seri will have to help. But I guess she does have a few months left to practice.
Megan: Sounds like a plan. Well, that is all the time we have today. Goodbye, everyone.
